Andy really could do with a good long run in the tournament and get more ranking points on board as he is now getting isolated in 4th in the rankings.

Its almost a fearful need to look at the results from today onwards.

I hope the "blip" was just a blip and, (I'm sure that it was) he manages to put three good performances in to get himself into the 2nd week.

Results so far....

J Ward (GBR) d A Golubev (KAZ) 63 63

L Robson (GBR) d A Panova (RUS) 63 76(3)

M Doi (JPN) d A Keothavong (GBR) 64 63

B Phau (GER) d [WC] D Evans (GBR) 76(4) 60

K Bondarenko (UKR) d [WC] N Broady (GBR) 63 60

So, sadly only Ward and Robson made it through. Real good wins for them though.

Today we have.....

[WC] Heather Watson (GBR) v Sorana Cirstea (ROU)
[WC] Shuai Zhang (CHN) v Elena Baltacha (GBR)
Edouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA) v James Ward (GBR)
Laura Robson (GBR) v Melinda Czink (HUN)

Friday I think. Men's second round is Friday and Saturday, (Andy has a bye in the first) and Djoker is playing on Saturday, so Andy's half should be Friday.

I have heard he will face possibly Raonic in the Third Round should he get through. That will be interesting as Raonic is the pick of the new kids on the block and has a superb serve. It will be the first time Andy has played him and usually he takes his time to work out a new opponent so could be a tight one.

Let's worry about that if he gets past Istomin/Falla. . .

James Ward has lost in straight sets to Vasselin so no Masters Cup appearance for him. Sad

Shame, this is the time in his career when he has to make waves and get into the 1st round of these events. He has the game to do so, but I'm not so sure he is confident enough. He may need a new coach, quickly.

Results so far...

[WC] Heather Watson (GBR) d Sorana Cirstea (ROU) 63 - 36 - 76
Edouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA) d James Ward (GBR) 63 - 63

[WC] S Zhang (CHN) d E Baltacha (GBR) 67(5) 63 62
M Czink (HUN) d L Robson (GBR) 76(4) 62

Only Heather Watson still in it and into the 3rd round Qualies.

X'ing fingers she makes it through to the 1st round proper, that would be a good signal to herself that she is on the right road. Sad to see Robson go out this early, I was expecting her to be in a better place by now, but she's young, lets hope she can continue improving and when she reaches her 19th birthday, Laura will be in a strong position to challenge the 1st week of tournies like this and go for the 2nd weeks.

Andy's first match will be against Alejandro Falla, the guy who gave Fed a few fits a couple of years ago. Andy won their only meeting at ATP level in LA in 2010, in straights sets 7-6 6-1, though he did also beat him in a Challenger in 2005.

Falla came through when Istomin retired with the score 6-1 2-1.

Can't wait to see how Murray approaches this game.

I'm full of expectation.

Kudos to Watson though, just found out she dug deep to get back from 5-0 down in the 3rd set ! what a girl.

I am hoping Andy sticks to his more aggressive approach to his matches now. Really important he gets the win first and foremost though.

Absolutely, I think we all want to see a continuation of a progressive, aggressive approach and that he continues to keep himself contained, emotionally.

So it will be interesting to see how a chat with Ivan has panned out.

The sites schedule menu isnt working for me again, it keeps downloading a file which is useless.

So I presume Andy and Heather will be playing, in GMT terms as they are 4 hrs behind ? this morning, like now or this afternoon. ESPN is covering it, but eurosport is only broadcasting the WTA side of things from Monday.

Going to check ESPN and see what they are doing.

no live coverage, but after an early bit of nonsense when Andy lost a 2-0 lead at the start of the first set Murray has now won 7 games in a row to lead 6-2 3-0. Well on his way Cool

meh, Andy (probably) loses focus and is broken back. However, he (probably again) re-gains his focus, breaks Falla and is serving for the match at 5-3.

Andy won 6-2 6-3 in a match which had as many breaks of serve as a WTA match. . . never mind, he has at last broken the USA spring hardcourt swing's run of first-round ducks!

Good win for Andy, he did say the "Falla" was good and the guy apparently came back in the 2nd playing some good tennis too.

Mised the match though, damn job!

Still got a bit of a tennis weekend to look forward to.

Watson still to start her match, c'mon girl !

Nice to see Andy get a comfortable win of sorts, if he got broken he broke straight back, not sure I like that strategy though!! Very Happy Hope he gets a good run this week.
