A poor first set from Andy (putting it politely) as Gasquet takes it 6-1 without really having to do too much. Time to up the levels Andy.

Better from Murray as he is now more competitive and it is going with serve in the second set. Murray leads 3-2.

Murray is back level at one set all. Getting really spicy folks and a bit of needle between the players. Fans really giving Murray stick as he holds his back but that fires Andy up to break and take the second set 6-4.

Murray on a red hot streak and leads the first three games of the third set without dropping a point. Shocked Gasquet mental frailties now under the microscope.

Hi Craig,

I've been away most the weekend and haven't been keeping up with the tennis.

Just logged in here and realised Andy is playing right now!

Just put the TV on....big thanks to ITV4 btw.

Anyway I'm thrilled to see Andy playing so well. I hope he can keep this up for the rest of the tourney.

He seems much improved on clay, is it too much to hope that this could be his first Slam title?

Come on Andy!

Ooh..I see Jubba's added some new smileys

Well the first set here he was nowhere but coupled with Gasquet's implosion Andy has played really well. I think Andy may meet his match against Ferrer to be honest as he is a clay court specialist who has been mightily impressive this year at Roland Garros but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Murray takes the third set to lead 1-6 6-4 6-1. Very Happy

Andy blitzed Gasquet in the end in four sets. He really turned up the heat in the final two sets playing some ripping shots. He's getting stick on 605v2 for the 'back business' but did that make a difference. Of course not.

Good performance from our man.

He loves winding up the crowd especially when they are French!

Petchy & Courier were also loving it as was myself and a lot of others

This to my mind is interesting tennis with a lot of variety - playing Ferrer next, Andy Isn't the favourite (on clay) so it might just work in his favour.

Let's hope so and hope the back stays OK.

There was a spell in those last two sets when he was stringing together the most ridiculous winners that even the ungracious French had to applaud. I think it is safe to say his back is fine enough and Murray will now line-up in his sixth consecutive slam quarter-final. Impressive stat that.

La French 'av nu manners, ruddy ewits.

I mean, a mexican wave begins as he's about to serve ??

Well it didn't help Gasquet, if they'd kept it normal, he may have done better. And someone said the French are very knowledgeable, only if you're Tenez that is !

I fancy his chances against Ferrer, he's like a mini version of Nadal, but with the same level of intensity. Still, if Murray can serve as he did today, Ferrer will find it difficult to beat him, never mind the other way round, the Spaniard has got to find his "A" game to beat Andy if he's playing the same shots he beat Richard with.

goodjob Well done Andy. dogood

Did someone really call the French knowledgeable? Not that I've ever seen. I live here, and believe me, proper tennis fans are always mildly embarassed by the crowd behaviour at RG. Even the commentators (who are unbelievably biased) were saying that it was poor form from the crowd to boo like that at the end, that Andy was a great player and didn't deserve such treatment.

In fact, they were pretty complimentary about Andy's performance today, calling him "unplayable" on several occasions in the final two sets.

Here's hoping he can produce that level of play from the start against Ferrer. If he does, he can win.

Hello everyone by the way Very Happy

Hi MfC. If Andy can produce the sort of stuff he played in the third and fourth set today against Ferrer he stands a good chance. Got a niggling feeling that Ferrer will be just too strong on clay.

forehand is the key I feel. If it's misfiring as in the first set today he has no chance, if it fires as in the last two that gives him a good chance. Also BHDL as we know Ferrer loves to run around his backhand so will be creeping over to his backhand corner.

According to the ITV commentators, the problem in the first was his string tension. He changed his racquet, either at the end of the set or perhaps the game before, and that seemed to solve the problem of getting the ball into the court!

The match started so much later than I expected that I ended up watching quite a lot of the WTA error-fest. By the time Andy's match finished I had an awful lot of chores to catch up on, so didn't get to the computer until late.

Hi M4C, I was quoting the little cameo about RG at the beginning of the programme yesterday, was it Miss Croft ?, well she said it and it surprised me when I heard it, the French are not known for bums on seats or anything about behaving in a sportsmanlike manner, but they are the most vocal of all the slams.

But they'd have a hard time beating the Aussies at booing though Smile

Decrepitude, I had the same problem, put the roast in the oven, didnt check it for ages and it hadn't come up to steam properly (old oven), result was an undercooked joint ! wife not too happy with that score lol.

Another Frenchman bites the dust. I pity Jo, he had it the bag with a cross court shot but went down the line to a waiting Novak. Pretty much ended his dreams of getting to the final. Kudos for Djoko in keeping it together to take the 5th set.

And DelBoy just couldn't take his chances when he needed to. Again, Federer brings his "A" game when he needs to.

Looks like some good tennis to follow tomorrow, I'm getting nervous already.

Watching Murray has prob taken years off your life Dec !

So shoot me down for even thinking that Murray could win this title, but....

Ferrer has had no creditable opponent so far this tournie,

Lacko
Paire
Youzhny
Granollers

He will suddenly be up against the No4 in the world. If anything he will have to up his game to be in contention. Nadal in the same boat...

Bolleli
Istomin
Schwank
Monaco

Suddenly, he's up against Almagro, a player I put just below Ferrer on clay. So he's going to have to regroup. If he peaked too early, he may have problems, I don't think he'll lose, but if Andy can go through, it might give Murray a chink of light in the semi's if any doubt comes Rafa's way.

Its a very wide outside chance that Murray could make it to the final, but if he did, I'd expect to see Federer there.

If.......

A lot will depend on what Andy Murray turns up. If it is the passive one then he loses but if he can fire himself up into a frenzy like we saw against Gasquet where he strung together long passages of fantastic winners he will win through. At least things now look far more encouraging than they did at the start of the Niemenen match. Very Happy

Too true CC, but he has brought his A game to the FO this year and has played some great matches so far. He's not been idle in the aggression dept and he's had a far harder route to the Q's than Nadal.

And if anyone (read haters, numpties alike) thinks that Lendl has not had much of a presence or influence on Andy so far, then look no further than Andy's tactics on court against Gasquet.

That was a leaf out of Ivan's book on how to out psyche an opponent, use an aggressive audience to your advantage and knock a man down, then put your boot on his chest with all your weight on it.

Just what Andy needed to do and has been capable of all these years. All the other top players do exactly the same thing, no more Mr Nice Guy, I think we've seen the back of that Andy Murray.

I like the new ruthless Murray, its about time.

I'm not sure that this was purely down to Lendl though. When Andy gets fired up he has always had that ability to blow opponents away. I recall he did the same to Gasquet at Wimbledon. On that occasion he hit outrageous winners way off court and really got the crowd whipped into a frenzy and he went on a hot streak in that match to turn a 2-0 down in sets dephicit around. This time he was riled by Gasquet's antics over a line call and the French crowd and it inspired him. When in that mood Andy is unplayable.
