Post by Guest on Mon 25 Jun 2012 - 14:31

With Andy Murray due to start his campaign tomorrow then today is all about Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. The reigning champion Djokovic is well on his way to a straight sets win over Juan Carlos Ferrero as he leads 6-3 6-3 1-0. Federer plays later. Bad boy David Nalbandian is a set and a break down to Janko Tipsarevic (No.8 seed).

Tipsarevic through in straight sets against David Nalbandian. I thought that match would be a little closer.

Oliver Golding put up a good fight and played some very good stuff but lost 6-1 6-7 6-7 5-7. A lot to be hopeful for in the future as he is only 18.

Andy Murray will be up third on Centre Court tomorrow so should be on court around 5pm to take on Nikolay Davydenko following Rafa Nadals match against Thomas Bellucci.

Heather Watson playing a great opening set, lots of variety and venom in her shots. Great to watch after our little upset last night, a fighting spirit and a little dervish if ever I saw one.

She deserved that set, completely. 6-2 and serving 1st in 2nd set.

Outplayed Benesova from the baseline, and that's saying something.

An early break at the start of the second set and Watson is well on her way to the Second Round.

Good hold and 4-1 up. Needs another break and she'll be home and dry. But mustn't get complacent or Benesova may get back in.

Great stuff. Heather Watson wins her first ever match at Wimbledon. We have a Brit in the Second Round. Lets hope Andy Murray joins her tomorrow.

That was a good win for her, I know there were many long points, but that just proves to her that she can mix it with the top players and win break points. Lots of them too, but Benesova played those points really well under pressure, but Heather just kept getting the ball back in play, it was so good to see a bit of grit from a British player, but then she always has been a gritty performer.

Can't wait to see how Murray performs now.

I expect him to shine a bit tomorrow, no prisoners and all that. If his 1st serve can stand the test of a series of bad starts, he may go deep, I'm not expecting a walkover, but it will be interesting to see what has changed in his grass game when it matter the most.

At first I was concerned with Davydenko but that has worn off. It is a match Andy should win as Davydenko is well past his best. Hopefully he can win in straight sets and build some confidence for the bigger challenges that lie ahead.

Good match from Oliver golding too, saw quite a bit of that match, 1st time I've seen him play and he looks to have a serve action very similar to Sampras. Not the same groundstrokes, he can play it quite flat or with top spin from low balls which fooled Andreev a few times today.

Lost it in the end to fatigue a major factor rather than Andreev turning it up. I thought Oliver hung in there and produced some good rallies and passing shots given he's only 18 yrs old ! Good future ahead of him if he can get a little fitter and more confident. But he's got the basis of a good tactical mind which bodes well too.

As for Davydenko CC, I believe it will all hinge on how Andy serves and how well Davy serves too. His returning is top notch if given the chance, but Andy may tip the balance in a close match, as he is better in that dept. Stroke for stroke Andy has a 60/40 advantage on a normal day at the office. I think Davy must be praying for Murray to be under par tomorrow, by a long chalk, if he wants to beat him.

One thing that Andy doesn't do at slams are First Round exits. Last time that happened in a slam was over four years ago at Australian Open in 2008. On the other hand Davydenko has failed to get past the First Round in four of his last six slams.

I hate stats at the best of times but they do inject a little "good feeling" where necessary.

So it'll be 5 of his last 7 slams then.... HappHappy

Well it does demonstrate how badly he has been struggling of late. I'd be gobsmacked if Andy lost tomorrow.
