Robson reaching new heights

Laura Robson has reached the semi finals of a tour event for the first time in her career and has done so beating the tournaments 41th ranked player and 2nd seed consecutively.

Having flirted within the top 100 recently, and with a brave battle against Shiavone in the 1st round at Wimbledon, she has shown enough good core tennis to enable her to get results like this. Always a fighter, but with stamina and strength issues, Laura has improved bit by bit over the last year and has made inroads into her physique and technique.

Up against the 8th seed Strycova today may prove her toughest assignment yet, after the R71 beat the 2nd seed yesterday, but to all intents and purposes, its new ground for Laura and one she can have confidence in, by producing a good show whatever the outcome.

Great build up for her in the coming Olympics, and one that may show up the selectors decision to choose Keothavong over either Watson or Robson for the singles, but with those two fighting in your corner, I wouldn't want to be the opposition that's for sure.

5-2 and receiving to win the 1st set. A break now and robson serves 1st in the 2nd set.

It must be hot out there, sweat pouring from the players.

And there it is, break point - 1st set to Laura, convincingly too.

Time to keep the pressure up on Strycova and cement her form.

On court coaching between sets ?? didn't know that was allowed in the WTA tour.

1st game to Laura and it wasn't a beautiful service game, but she hung on. Strycova is not playing well, might have an injury, groin area, but Laura's shots are punishing.

Heat sapping their energy as well, feet must feel like lead weights.

Good hold, esp after a fall on a sitter shot that took her out of her comfort zone, but only for one point, back on the attack and its 2-1 to Laura.

Strycova having a massage. May be tactical, but Laura doesn't looked fazed by it as she's getting prolonged coaching advice.

Fighting to keep her serve, too many silly UE's.

Lost it to another UE and too many DF's.

She has to buckle down now and get back into it.

Df's coming in waves now.

Fights back to deuce.

Another DF. deuce. Adv Robson...c'mon hold FGS!

No...UE, back to deuce. This is the game she must win.

Adv Robson again, can she do it.....nope, netted a normal FH.

Net call to Strycova, lucky. Adv against her.

Wow, gutsy play there, back to deuce with cross court shot. Strycova UE gives Robbie another Adv point. Can't convert, car alarms going off in tandem. Deuce again. Strycova cant take a passing shot at net and dunks it.

Finally, Laura gives Strycova an angled shot and she nets it....Phew, goodness me, that was a good game in the end, even for the numerous DF's and UE's.

4-3 to Laura.

A guy had to be told to leave the court during that game, his phone went off and he had a conversation that everyone could hear! amazing.

Anyway 4-4 and Robbie serving.

Suns gone below stadium, so its getting cooler.

Oh dear, UE count is riding high, back to deuce from a strong position.

Good drop shot from Strycova gives her BP.

Another stupid UE gives the break back, not good, Strycova serving for the 2nd set now.

Laura's gone off the boil, must be the drop in temp.

Yep, good aggressive play brings up 30-30.

Attacking the 1st serve and getting results, BP.

But Strycova hits a good cross courter, deuce.

Attempted lob is long and Laura gets another BP.

Brilliant passing shot gets Robson the Break and its 5 all.

Strycova'a little gamesmenship ploys are straining the patience.

Its not working though.

DF number 60,987,465 gets the score to 30-30, now its 40-30, now its deuce guessed it another DF !!!

BP ... c'mon Laura.

Egads.....DF hands Strycova the break back yet again. Dont know what is going on there, but yesterdays match saw 6 breaks of serve or something like that. Now Robson has to break to go to a TB and stand any hope of ending this early. If it goes to a 3rd set, it could go either way and the score may go awol.

Strycova not hanging about 30-0 at a blink of the eye.

Thats two netted shots from Laura, goes to 40-0 to Strycova and then its a wide forehand UE that lets Strycova back in the match.

Laura will need to tighten up the UE count, but its the DF numbers that gave the whole set away. But she is playing aggressively and seemingly without fear on a lot of those shots, which is good for her spleen I would say.

Its also bodes well for her career long term, as these sort of errors should get less and less as she matures in her game. Right now, her service game needs an overhaul, its not bad, 1st serves are strong and fast, accuracy seems ok, but she loses focus or something and shots fly off the racquet like a scatter gun.

If she can minimalize this side of her game, she stands a good chance of winning the match, but giving soft points to her opponent on your serve isn't going to get her to the final.

Well, Robson lost the 3rd set 6-2, so her chance to appear in the final is gone, but not her drive to get to the top of her game.

Even though this match was peppered with UE's and DF's, the fact that she is playing aggressively put her opponents under pressure to perform well against her. She came up against her own demons tonight and rather lost the whole match to some silly shots, but there is enough promise there to keep her head inside the top 100 when she does make it. (113 at the moment)

Should she continue to improve her form and service game, Laura may well make it into the top 50 within the next 12 months or less if she can make inroads into slams and the ATP tour, which she has the ability/skills but not the experience yet to fulfill her potential. But compared to her place on the tour when she first stepped up from the juniors completely, Robson has shown immense drive to get better, who knows, a top ten place before she turns 21 is not an impossible situation.

Thanks for the running commentary Jubba. Laura always showed potential and I agree she may rise a good bit further, if she gets a few good draws. She has been unlucky lately with meeting high ranking players who she has pushed hard. So yeah, she may be top 50 for sure over the next 12 months. It was great to see 4 ladies in the WTA top 100 for the first time since 1991 Very Happy

She has broken inside the 100 mark with her progress on Saturday.

At 91 now, she may well have been lower had she not had those 2 consecutively high ranked players in the 1st rounds of slams this year. She has enough skills to get her through the qualies now, so as you say, with a bit of luck, she can get into the bottom half of the tonners and get better opponents (easier) in the 1st week of the slams, which I think exonerates her from having to qualify as well.

I think she can get to at least the 4th round, if and when Laura gets a normal run at them.

I just like her attitude and how she can channel her anger into the shots she plays. Andy could learn something from Robson in that dept, although he is getting better by the day, going the whole hog of Wimbledon without those awful moments of frustration sapping his focus, he has showed a growing maturity towards his game now.

It can only get better.
