Tokyo ATP 500

Post by Guest on Sat 29 Sep 2012 - 12:32

Yuk. Andy has drawn Gael Monfils in the first round. He does seem to have a bit of a habit of drawing players who are underranked because of injury layoffs in early rounds. The H2H is 3:2 in Andy's favour, but Gael won their last encounter at Paris (Bercy) in 2010.

Full draw:

[1]Andy Murray GBR v Gael Monfils FRA
Albert Ramos ESP v Lukas Lacko SVK
Jeremy Chardy FRA v WC Yuichi Sugita JPN
WC Hiroki Morita JPN v [7] Stanislas Wawrinka SUI

[3] Janko Tipsarevic SRB
v Gilles Simon FRA
Martin Klizan SVK v Q
Viktor Troicki SRB v Robin Haase NED
Radek Stepanek CZE v [6] Milos Raonic CAN

[5] Nicolas Almagro ESP
v WC Tatsuma Ito JPN
Q v Bernard Tomic AUS
Q v Marcos Bagdhatis CYP
Q [4] Juan Monaco ARG

[8] Kei Nishikori JPN v Go Soeda JPN
Jarkko Nieminen FIN v Tommy Robredo ESP
Thomaz Bellucci BRA v Alejandro Falla COL
Benoit Paire FRA v [2] Tomas Berdych CZE

I would say though that we are taking about a 'new' Andy Murray now. A slam winner, filled with the belief that he can beat anyone on any give occasion. Murray should win.

Gael Monfils has withdrawn with yet another injury (or maybe the original one playing up), so Andy's first match will be against LL Ivo Karlovic. He leads the H2H 4:0, but Big Ivo is always a threat particularly in BO3, so Andy had better get himself in gear early.

Ivo may also be out for a bit of revenge after the Wimbledon match. I wonder if he will be called for any footfaults here? Very Happy

LOL. Utter confusion as to whether Andy will play somebody or other in R1 tomorrow, or go straight into R2 on Wednesday (per the BBC). The tournament is said to have announced his R1 opponent will be announced on Tuesday morning.

Anybody fancy a match against Andy? Grab your racquets and get out to Tokyo, you just might get the place!

Andy takes the first set in a tie break with Dr. Ivo

Karlovic should be banned from the tour with that big serve of his lol

I know - he kept acing his way out of trouble. 12 aces in the first set!

At least Andy is serving first in the second set, should help to keep the pressure on Big Ivo.

Andy takes the second set 6-4 and a win.

Didn't see the match D only got the score through Bet 365 but apart from his serve Karlovic has nowt much else.

Onwards and upwards for the USO & Double Olympic medal winner!

Andy breaks just at the right time to take the match 7-6(7) 6-4.

Ivo served 18 aces and still couldn't get a set.

Not possible to see the match, BOO - no tv or livestreams until Thursday.

Dammit even Challengers manage to have at least a static camera at one end. An ATP 500 and they can't even manage that?

Hi all. A decent win for Andy today. When rusty (as he must have been) it is tough to get any sort of rhythm when playing a massive server like Karlovic but Andy got the job done 7-6 6-4. I really hope he can win this tournament and get those title wins ticking over again as they have been a little few and far between this year (big ones aside).

Yes Craig it would be nice to win this and the next one - after all he is the defending champion for both events.

(Don't know why some words on my posts are underlined - must be my keyboard!?)

Well there can be no excuses if he doesn't win here in Japan as he is top seed, reigning champion and full of confidence having won his first slam.

The only player that I think would trouble him is Berdy - another big
server like Ivo but has a lot more variety - but Andy has beaten him the
last couple of times (on Hard Courts) so there is reason to be positive!

Murray on court against Lacko (still can't watch it Sad) and breaks serve in game 2 to go 2-0 up. Can't see Murray struggling today, Lacko just isn't in his league...

Live TV coverage doesn't start until tomorrow MfC. Murray cruising at the moment and leads 3-0. It looks like being a fairly comfortable win for Andy.

the good news for Lacko is that he has won another point. The bad news is that he's now 5-0 down, having won just 2 of the 22 points played so far...

Lacko puts up a bit more fight towards the end of the set, but Murray cruises through it 6-1.

well that was easy Very Happy

in continuing my ridiculous brand of Murray optimism i predict a comfortable straight sets win over Stan in the QFs. Sure Stan has caused Murray some problems in the past, but Murray has moved onto another level now.

He may give him a few "moments", but Wawrinka suffers most when he is outplayed and then goes for silly shots, and lets face it, Andy always outplayed most guys, not consistently in a game, but now.....well, its a whole different ball game.

When Andy got into difficulties before, his attitude was one of reflection, now its one of optimism and looking to the next point.

With his serve improving, he is going to be one hell of a player to beat.

I am feeling the optimism too but it will only remain if he wins the tournament as he should do. No real big guns in his way so I want a tournament win and expect a tournament win.

anyone watching?

Murray winning the first set 6-2, a bit of faffing about in his first service game saving 4 BPs, but other than that emphatic. FH looking sharp, return looking sharp, and he takes it with a second serve ace!

OK so some serious faffinf about in the second set, but gets the job done eventually, 6-2 3-6 6-2. Nice and aggressive, a few too many errors at times, but still a reasonably good performance.
