Simon pushes the boat out and goes long. Two match points for Murray.

Change over again. Murray must hold serve here.

Yesss. Murray forces Simon into an error at the net to win the tie break 8-6. A win for Andy - a confidence booster hopefully.

No is the answer and Simon goves the match to Andy in the end.

good play in parts, rough round the edges in the rest.

Yes and it sums up why Andy toils on clay. Too patchy but was laced with some brilliant shots.

Well... that was tense. Smile

Hopefully Murray can improve against Berdych- I think he can win that is he plays his best tennis.

He needs more consistency and potency in those ground shots and to get off to a better start than he did tonight. It also depends on how well he can recover from tonight's mini-marathon which finished way after 1 am Madrid time.

I did watch the match to the bitter end, but was too tired to do anything other than switch off and get to bed! I have to get up early in the morning these days.

I can't say I enjoyed watching (though my own mood may have had something to do with that). Ah well, he has scored enough points to have regained #2 even if Fed had won the tournament, so it can't be said he only got #2 because Fed handed it to him.

Andy did say he needed to hit lots of balls to get used to clay. They certainly did that!

I can't say I'm too confident about beating Berdy.

I am formulating an opinion about Andy Murray on clay. It is clear it is his weakest surface and he isn't truly confident or comfortable on it. With wins the confidence and comfort returns but that takes time and confidence-boosting wins. He hasn't had any confidence boosting wins this season (quite the opposite) so I see matches like last night as more of a step to confidence building. The more wins he gets under his belt the better for him. The annoying thing is that he seems to have to start afresh on clay each year whereas for the other top players the transaction to clay comes much easier to them.

Rafael Nadal got a real fright from David Ferrer today. Nadal was a set and a break down and on the brink but won the second set on a tie-break before coasting through the final set with a bagel.

Andy Murray will take to the court for his quarter-final against Tomas Berdych in about half an hours time. My expectations are pretty low and feel the Czech is the better clay courter or at least far more consistent on the surface. Still if Andy comes out all guns blazing and builds the confidence and stays competitive then who knows.

A much more solid start by Murray today. First two games going with serve 1-1.

It will be interesting to see how andy handles this match.

Berdych has beaten Andy the last two and only two times they have met on clay.

Once at the FO in the 4th round in 3 sets and Monte Carlo last year, I think we all remember that one, 1 set to Andy after a Tie break, then Tomas found his clay gear and breezed thu the next 2 sets.

Murray is better this year on clay I think, not taking into account his stray shots and what I can only describe as pathetic errors, but when he's focused he can dictate, and thats what he has to do against Tomas, the CZE player can hit winners from anywhere if he has the time and the inclination.

I hope it goes to three sets, but Berdych is strong on clay.

I fancy Berdych to win. Just the more consistent and comfortable player on clay.

A dip in Andy's level and rise in Berdych level here. Murray scrapping to hold serve. Deuce.

Careless from Andy. He had his chances but couldn't quite hold onto his serve. Back on serve at 4-4. banghead
