Rome Masters 2013

Post by Guest on Sat 11 May 2013 - 13:31

The Rome Masters follows hot on the tail of the Madrid Masters and Andy Murray will hope to go deeper than he did in Madrid.

Andy Murray's potential route to glory is:- Round 2 Marcell Granollers, Round 3 Kei Nishikori, Quarter-Final Juan Martin Del Potro, Semi-Final Roger Federer, Final Novak Djokovic.

Easy peasy, then.

Of course no Masters should be easy. Could be a lot worse.

As far as I can tell Andy Murray's first match in Rome will be on Wednesday against Marcell Granollers.

By the way what a great result for Laura Robson in Rome today. She beat Venus Williams in straight sets.

Oh dear oh dear, Robson pretty much threw away a great start and served herself into a 1 set deficit.

Willaims 1 up and confident. Laura trying to find her form on serve and if she doesn't stop the silly errors, then she will not progress. Her 2nd serve is not good, when its out its long, when its in its mostly a sitter. Several DF's have not helped, but she still stops after the toss up, which highlights her ingrained weakness, lack of service consistency.

Lets hope she comes out fighting and buries the meanies.

1st service game and 2UE's, 1 DF, a winner, an UE from Serena, then a forced error from Williams brings up deuce.

A great X court winner to go Van up.

Beautiful wide serve brings a sitter to put the 2nd set at 1 game all.

What a mixture from Laura.

3 UE's in normal rally conditions, c/mon Laura.

Then a nice DTL winner.

Oh well, Serena too strong in that last point and goes in front.

Pretty much sums up Robsons game tonight, flashes of brilliance but too many wayward shots to put williams under any pressure. Of course, Serena is hitting the balls back hard and fast so its not easy for Laura.

Still, its good to see her going for the shots.

Good hold there from Laura, was 15-30 down at one point.

Now can she pressure Williams on serve ?

Laura right in the mix there, took it straight back to Serena, several deuces and great returns, didnt quite convert but a good turnaround of intent and stroke play.

Hope it changes her attitude and she begins to play more solid, it certainly got her a couple of break points in the last game. 3-2 to williams.

That seals it I think, a DF to lose her serve. If she can come back from this position, it'll be a miracle. She has done something similar in OZ though, but here, on clay, I can't see it.

Experience showing tonight, so although I'm still amazed and concerned that Laura can not find someone to sort out her serve, its still impressive for a nineteen year old playing the No1 player in the world.

Not bad considering.

An ace at 15-30, serving to survive is pretty good.

But there it goes a DF to give Serena her spot in the 4th round.

6-2, 6-2.

Scoreline not showing how good Laura played at times, but its a good score to highlight how much she needs to improve. But overall, there is a lot to be happy about and a lot to go away and look at and hope, which if and when her new coach arrives, it will be someone who can change it for her.

She's not that far away from a top 10 spot if Laura can iron out the errors, know when to go for the winners and play more conservatively and aggressively when needed.

She beat Williams on quite a few points with her aggression and accuracy in the corners and on the baseline, she can't go away tonight feeling to bad about the outcome.

Andyyyyyyyy what are you doing? Smile

A set and a break down to Granollers.
Frankly I think before playing these Masters he should play 250 tournaments like Casablanca.

I hate to say it, but losing to Granollers would probably be the worst loss of the last few years.

Maybe he is carrying a hip injury?

Amrit I said last week he had a hip problem and we are seeing it again here. He is battling on gamely but this would have been a tough enough match for him on clay but with an injury it magnifies it. At least Andy is showing great fighting spirit as he battles through the pain barrier. Murray has fought back from 4-1 down to lead 6-5 with Granollers serving to save the second set.

It is going to a second set tie-break. Granollers you think must win this you think otherwise his chances are gone.

Very worrying this. Andy battled through to win the second set tie-break and promptly retired with the hip injury. That is a big worry as hip injuries are not easy to shift and for Murray to retire you know it has to be pretty serious. Sad

The last time Murray retired from a match was also on his birthday, 6 years ago.

Yes but on the back of a pretty weak clay court season I cannot see him progressing further than the quarters especially if the hip problem hasn't cleared up.

Let's hope it's not close to the joint, if it is tendon rip he's in big trouble. a pulled muscle though may be easier to shift.
Does this go a long way to explaining his poor serving in Madrid and Rome, particularly his 2nd serve which was short and slow ?

His 1st match might not be up till the 28th May, which gives him a good 10 days to recover and get in a little practice. It's not the best way to enter a Slam, so his prospects are not encouraging.

Well I am sure I referred to noticing a hip injury during Madrid last week. He was rubbing and flexing it frequently last week and evidently it has not cleared up. Lets just hope he has not made it worse.
